A few years ago, I used to tutor a kid with Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s kids are incredibly smart, but lacking in social graces that come naturally to most of us. They take everything literally and don’t seem to sense what another person might be thinking or feeling. The result is a child who can be really impressive — and really, really irritating. You have to remind yourself constantly that it’s not their fault. They simply don’t have the wiring that the rest of us do to monitor how we’re doing socially.
